Linux Kernel up to 6.18.50/7.2.3 iaa iaa_comp_adecompress buffer overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Upgrading the affected component is advised.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as very critical was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.18.50/7.2.3. Affected by this vulnerability is the function iaa_comp_adecompress of the component iaa. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a buffer overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-120. The product copies an input buffer to an output buffer without verifying that the size of the input buffer is less than the size of the output buffer, leading to a buffer overflow. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: crypto: iaa - unmap dst before software fallback on decompress On a hardware analytics error, decompress retries through the software fallback, which writes req->dst with the CPU while it is still mapped DMA_FROM_DEVICE. With SWIOTLB active the later dma_unmap_sg() copies the stale bounce buffer over req->dst, corrupting the result. Unmap before the fallback runs. The async path unmaps inline; the sync path signals the retry with -EAGAIN so iaa_comp_adecompress() runs the fallback after unmapping.

The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-80945 since 08/26/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/11/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.18.51, 7.2.4 or 7.3-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch fc933a4a419ba8a75da28666a018602c44846953/fcd86180ef78b0e41763faef7c6d2de7dfb50c1a/94a25930477113730372e0fa2985da4c5ac95c9a is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
