Linux Kernel up to 6.18.49/7.2.3 dm-pcache cache_segs_init n_segs/segments out-of-bounds

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The affected component should be upgraded.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.18.49/7.2.3. Affected is the function cache_segs_init of the component dm-pcache. The manipulation of the argument n_segs/segments with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: dm-pcache: validate geometry fields from on-disk cache_info cache_segs_init() iterates cache_info->n_segs times indexing cache->segments[], which is sized to the cache device geometry, and get_seg_id() takes each segment id from the on-media cache_info and the per-segment next_seg link. Both come from cache device metadata that is only CRC-protected with a fixed public seed, so whoever supplies the cache device on a table load (CAP_SYS_ADMIN) controls them: an oversized n_segs or an out-of-range id drives an out-of-bounds access of cache->segments[] and a wild CACHE_DEV_SEGMENT() pointer into the device mapping -- an out-of-bounds read and write from on-disk data. Reject an n_segs that exceeds the device segment count and a segment id that is out of range before either is used. Valid metadata is unaffected.

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2026-80962 since 08/26/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. Additional levels of successful authentication are necessary for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/11/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.18.50, 7.2.4 or 7.3-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch ab5dcde6fa96bc115b85f3621c60e39c66229a90/3e19172089ec81132a8a48e802b1034a744209f4/32d1809da31094ef76fd98dc1f1a8b55ca1295dd is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
