Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.18.49/7.2.3. This affects the function cache_replay of the component dm-pcache. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: dm-pcache: clamp the tail kset read to the segment data region The tail-kset read in cache_replay(), the writeback worker and the GC worker bounds its length by PCACHE_SEG_SIZE - seg_off, the raw segment size rather than the data region. A tail near the segment end reads past the segment data into the following control area. Clamp the read to cache_seg_remain(), the data region.
The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2026-80958 since 08/26/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. The exploitation needs additional levels of successful authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/11/2026).
