Linux Kernel up to 6.12.108/6.18.49/7.2.3 aloop probe ID out-of-bounds

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Executing a manipulation of the argument ID can lead to out-of-bounds. This vulnerability is tracked as CVE-2026-80972. The attack is restricted to local execution. No exploit exists. You should upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.108/6.18.49/7.2.3. It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function probe of the component aloop. The manipulation of the argument id with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ALSA: aloop: Check card index validity at probe aloop driver blindly trusts that the given devptr->id value is within the proper card index range at probe. It's OK for the devices the driver itself creates at the module probe time, but if the device is bound manually via sysfs interface, this could be -1 as "none", and this leads to OOB access for index[] and other parameters. Add a sanity check for the card index and warn/correct it if it's a value out of the range.

The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-80972 since 08/26/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. Additional levels of successful authentication are required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 09/11/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.12.109, 6.18.50, 7.2.4 or 7.3-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch c589aeaadfde1cfedb5c6f0a3c782807282126d9/7b3f9855849363e402bf2141df2b428581cbf31b/efbc2e9e43a1b5c6d75ae47439c06896bb142ae6/819b106a9fd2ef3fd8abf898b9a8e4524eca8f48 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
