Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.108/6.18.49/7.2.3 and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function handle_connect_req of the component svcrdma. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a allocation of resources vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-770. The product allocates a reusable resource or group of resources on behalf of an actor without imposing any restrictions on the size or number of resources that can be allocated, in violation of the intended security policy for that actor. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: svcrdma: Reject connection when transport allocation fails handle_connect_req() returns without action when svc_rdma_create_xprt() fails to allocate the new transport. The CM core returns 0 for CONNECT_REQUEST events, so it does not destroy the new rdma_cm_id. Each allocation failure under memory pressure leaks one rdma_cm_id, and a remote peer driving connection attempts can amplify this. Reject the connection by returning a non-zero status from the CM event handler, which tells the CM core to destroy the orphaned cm_id.
The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-89531 since 09/11/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 09/12/2026). The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1499.
Upgrading to version 6.12.109, 6.18.50, 7.2.4 or 7.3-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 6e21754bbf75075f3fee1cebc79f3417364235ec/3cf372cec7ab2cd8c6002bf775cc14d90ccb098b/1f6a14c142fee4778c32709d1d54595c2e2b7991/0944462247dcb7de7622cdaaadf5f05c52707dab is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
