Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.108/6.18.49/7.2.3. It has been declared as very critical. This vulnerability affects the function xdp_convert_zc_to_xdp_frame of the file net/core/gro.c of the component XDP. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: xdp: fix zero-copy frame layout xdp_convert_zc_to_xdp_frame() clones an XSK packet into an order-0 page and advertises PAGE_SIZE as its frame size. It allows the copied frame to occupy the page tail needed by skb_shared_info and records zero headroom even when metadata separates the frame header from packet data. An AF_XDP zero-copy packet redirected through cpumap can therefore make the skb overlap skb_shared_info or place it beyond the allocated page. Limit the copied layout to SKB_WITH_OVERHEAD(PAGE_SIZE) and include the metadata length in frame headroom. Redirect callers already handle a NULL conversion result. The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-81002 since 08/26/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/12/2026).
Upgrading to version 6.12.109, 6.18.50, 7.2.4 or 7.3-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 444216dacdbebd3e52d5e704facafbb230da09e9/15d1f3c0dbe7a740f779337deb39f23cd8d002c8/68d7cc5512238693670fc19c7a615df631e10edf/71283aaa6c65b3cec84caf1dc78560985737641f is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
