Linux Kernel up to 6.12.108/6.18.49/7.2.3 ravb null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.108/6.18.49/7.2.3. This affects an unknown code block of the component ravb. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net: ravb: avoid dereferencing an invalid PTP clock The PTP clock is unavailable before the first open, so querying its index can dereference a NULL pointer. Registration failures can also leave an error pointer in priv->ptp.clock. Cache the PHC index separately and report -1 while no clock is registered. Normalize registration errors to NULL and preserve the static timestamping capabilities.

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2026-80992 since 08/26/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/12/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.12.109, 6.18.50, 7.2.4 or 7.3-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch fc710f89a644e030a7ca15343176ca862fd61b9d/8d4d06d6e2b501cb8e30ed3b1924c470358e8052/0aaa53936419cf0c19c670387fc6d431e042a1b6/1f77af0aaf277413ff32f6ff8c2c4282bd64c897 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
