Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.108/6.18.49/7.2.3. It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function set_attribute of the file dell-wmi-sysman.c of the component dell-wmi-sysman. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a missing encryption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-311. The product does not encrypt sensitive or critical information before storage or transmission. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: platform/x86: dell-wmi-sysman: Don't hex dump attribute security buffer set_attribute() populates the security area of the BIOS attribute request buffer with the current admin password via populate_security_buffer(), then dumps the whole request buffer with print_hex_dump_bytes(). This can expose the plaintext admin password in the kernel log. The same issue was fixed for the password attribute path by commit d1a196e0a6dc ("platform/x86: dell-wmi-sysman: Don't hex dump plaintext password data"). Remove the remaining dump from the BIOS attribute path.
The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-89444 since 09/11/2026. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. Additional levels of successful authentication are needed for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1600.
Upgrading to version 6.12.109, 6.18.50, 7.2.4 or 7.3-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability.
