CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.108/6.18.49/7.2.3. This impacts the function cros_ec_sensorhub_ring_handler of the component sensorhub. Executing a manipulation of the argument sensor_num can lead to out-of-bounds. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-81017. It is possible to launch the attack on the local host. There is not any exploit available. You should upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as very critical was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.108/6.18.49/7.2.3. This vulnerability affects the function cros_ec_sensorhub_ring_handler of the component sensorhub. The manipulation of the argument sensor_num with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: platform/chrome: sensorhub: Bound the EC-reported sensor number Each EC FIFO event carries an 8-bit sensor number (in->sensor_num). cros_ec_sensorhub_ring_handler() validates the FIFO event count, the per-read count and the ring bound, but not the sensor number, which cros_ec_sensor_ring_process_event() then uses unchecked to index sensorhub->batch_state[] - allocated with only sensorhub->sensor_num entries. A sensor number of sensor_num or larger is an out-of-bounds read and write of batch_state[]. Validate the sensor number in the ring handler, where each event is read from the EC, and drop a malformed event before it is used.

The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-81017 since 08/26/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 09/12/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.12.109, 6.18.50, 7.2.4 or 7.3-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 3d2636dce0a8fe9eecad29010699847be425dc80/5eaf7faa99578ae090030d1e2e6ea3b37a615496/4d9bf63ed74f859c6698bc01d8fb216ef9253867/833740a2333c2e4db4e02e3d0ffba04e8718a5f3 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
