Linux Kernel up to 6.18.50/7.2.3 ring-buffer free_pages subbuf_order memory leak

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation of the argument subbuf_order leads to memory leak. This vulnerability is referenced as CVE-2026-89500. Remote exploitation of the attack is possible. No exploit is available. Upgrading the affected component is advised.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.18.50/7.2.3. This issue affects the function free_pages of the component ring-buffer. The manipulation of the argument subbuf_order with an unknown input leads to a memory leak vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-401. The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, which slowly consumes remaining memory. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ring-buffer: Make cpu_buffer::free_page a buffer_data_read_page Discarding a cached reader page after a concurrent ring buffer resize uses the new global subbuf_order for the free_pages() call. This mismatched order may crashes the kernel or leaks memory because the cached page was allocated under the old size. Save the actual free_page order alongside the page address to ensure we always refer to the correct value and do not rely on the potentially stalled cpu_buffer->subbuf_order value. The simplest is to make free_page a buffer_data_read_page which already covers exactly what we need: a page address and a page order.

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-89500 since 09/11/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/12/2026). The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1499 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

Upgrading to version 6.18.51, 7.2.4 or 7.3-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch a1dabe68fb53730bc0be60c5dbfd3f4c560084e7/d787d509bdf6c88c85e095247daf7456cb7fb772/7a1fb95de5404134f8758c1295ce88986bdf117c is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
