Linux Kernel up to 7.2.3 ring-buffer __rb_get_reader_page_from_remote input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The affected component should be upgraded.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 7.2.3 and classified as very critical. This issue affects the function __rb_get_reader_page_from_remote of the component ring-buffer. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ring-buffer: Stop remote reader update when page swap fails The remote swap_reader_page callback can return -EBUSY when the writer moves the head before the remote catches it, particularly during an event storm on a small buffer. __rb_get_reader_page_from_remote() currently warns about that failure but continues with the unchanged reader ID and rearranges the local page list as though the swap succeeded. Handle the callback failure as a recoverable error. Report it with pr_warn_ratelimited() and return NULL. Callers already handle a NULL reader page as a failed attempt. This avoids splicing the same page as both the previous and new reader without flooding the log under contention.

The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-89499 since 09/11/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/12/2026).

Upgrading to version 7.2.4 or 7.3-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch a14a97048e48471e283d76879b83d2ae323e0722/5eab74874d11160725c42ab676ba97a797a362eb is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
