Linux Kernel up to 6.12.108/6.18.49/7.2.3 GHES ghes_handle_arm_hw_error out-of-bounds

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability classified as very critical has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.108/6.18.49/7.2.3. Impacted is the function ghes_handle_arm_hw_error of the component GHES. Performing a manipulation results in out-of-bounds. This vulnerability is identified as CVE-2026-89588. The attack can be initiated remotely. There is not any exploit available. It is recommended to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.108/6.18.49/7.2.3. It has been classified as very critical. This affects the function ghes_handle_arm_hw_error of the component GHES. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ACPI: APEI: GHES: fix ARM section length accounting after header In ghes_handle_arm_hw_error(), after skipping the cper_sec_proc_arm header with (err + 1), the remaining length was reduced by sizeof(err) (pointer size) instead of sizeof(*err) (structure size). That overestimates the bytes left for cper_arm_err_info records and can let the parser read past the CPER section when err_info_num is large enough relative to error_data_length. Use sizeof(*err) so the length accounting matches the pointer advance and the earlier sizeof(*err) size check.

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2026-89588 since 09/11/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/12/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.12.109, 6.18.50, 7.2.4 or 7.3-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 5ff385e9403e87ae33f65b8c38698d3b1e92cfde/452eb28e03015abec6d4bf6488ee567706ade4e1/b48b613073c3d652cb1823c15d16f7067cf4cee4/903308ea40adf0577d82eab69882faf8836326ce is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
