Linux Kernel up to 6.18.49/7.2.3 hugetlb __unmap_hugepage_range integer overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.18.49/7.2.3. It has been rated as very critical. This issue affects the function __unmap_hugepage_range of the component hugetlb. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: hugetlb: only adjust reservation during unmapping if mapcount is 0 Since df7a6d1f6405, __unmap_hugepage_range can adjust reservations. In the case of folio mapped in both a parent and a child, if the parent unmaps the range first, the reservation adjustment will result in an underflow of the reserved count. Once the child unmaps the range, the count is restored. Change __unmap_hugepage_range() to check the mapcount before adjusting the reservation.

The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-89593 since 09/11/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/12/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.18.50, 7.2.4 or 7.3-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch a3c65af20cceb7f997847727636b4017326f845d/0f001491e5a2ec69aa9d5dd6b799e5742245f9ea/5120b1e048d48596ffaec1a8412012a91adba73b is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
