Linux Kernel up to 6.12.108/6.18.49/7.2.3 fbdev uvesafb_init denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as very critical was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.108/6.18.49/7.2.3. Affected by this vulnerability is the function uvesafb_init of the component fbdev. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: fbdev: uvesafb: unregister connector callback on init failure uvesafb_init() registers the v86d connector callback before registering the platform driver. If platform_driver_register() fails, the function returns the error directly and leaves the connector callback registered. The later platform-device failure path already unregisters the callback. Add the same cleanup before the final return when platform-driver registration fails. This issue was identified during our ongoing static-analysis research while reviewing kernel code.

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-89597 since 09/11/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/12/2026). The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1499 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

Upgrading to version 6.12.109, 6.18.50, 7.2.4 or 7.3-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 9f8a822b44c42502f105cf6574f4867067eecdd0/466a8af0dee2cf745307155e26884e19a37b7e15/9e768ae51426af2034d479133cfd73010d641b1a/de8db23aa7c337e606fca9faf48b3ba72968597a is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
