Linux Kernel up to 6.18.50/7.2.3 fnic fnic_fcoe_process_vlan_resp deadlock

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.18.50/7.2.3 and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function fnic_fcoe_process_vlan_resp of the component fnic. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a deadlock vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-833. The product contains multiple threads or executable segments that are waiting for each other to release a necessary lock, resulting in deadlock. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: scsi: fnic: Use GFP_ATOMIC for VLAN alloc under spinlock fnic_fcoe_process_vlan_resp() allocates a VLAN descriptor with kzalloc_obj() (default GFP_KERNEL) while holding vlans_lock via spin_lock_irqsave(). GFP_KERNEL may sleep, which is not allowed in this atomic context and can trigger a sleeping-from-invalid-context warning or deadlock. Pass GFP_ATOMIC so the allocation is safe under the IRQ-safe spinlock.

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-89514 since 09/11/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/12/2026). The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1499 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

Upgrading to version 6.18.51, 7.2.4 or 7.3-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch c4ade059aaeb51fdb3f4ae71e1ea3e2019b85178/d86f65aed01408613607f8fc31493f07554788f2/9639c6324524ea3f934908bd51f02430000954ab is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
