Details
A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel (the affected version unknown) and classified as very critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown part of the component NTFS. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ntfs: verify run length exceeding volume boundary The mapping pairs decoder validates that the starting LCN is within the volume but does not check if the run extends beyond the volume boundary. A malformed NTFS image with a crafted mapping pairs array could cause the kernel to access memory beyond the volume boundary, potentially leading to memory corruption and privilege escalation. Add validation to ensure lcn + length stays within nr_clusters.
The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-89610 since 09/11/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The current price for an exploit might be approx.
