Linux Kernel up to 6.12.108/6.18.49/7.2.3 udf udf_get_pblock_virt15 out-of-bounds

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.108/6.18.49/7.2.3. It has been classified as critical. This affects the function udf_get_pblock_virt15 of the component udf. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: udf: reject VAT indexes equal to the entry count UDF 1.50 virtual partition mapping uses the VAT as an array of physical block mappings. s_num_entries stores the number of entries in that array, not the highest valid index. The valid VAT indexes are therefore below s_num_entries. udf_get_pblock_virt15() currently rejects only indexes greater than s_num_entries. A crafted image can request index s_num_entries, pass the bounds check, and make the kernel read one entry past the allocated VAT table. Change the check to reject block >= s_num_entries, so the count is handled as an exclusive upper bound. A crafted UDF image reproduced this on origin/master commit 0e35b9b6ec0ffcc5e23cbdec09f5c622ad532b53 with a KASAN slab-out-of-bounds report in udf_get_pblock_virt15(). Trail of Bits has a reproducer that triggers kernel panic demonstrating the bug, and can share it if needed.

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2026-89525 since 09/11/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/12/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.12.109, 6.18.50, 7.2.4 or 7.3-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 9193368408d792cec2057628d87862140fb1ce1c/b95c33a4e743874f1b0a45bf2aaa4da553552bd1/1bd7947f1463c21edafa256d0fbec5b99215e2b6/cac0cb07f29ccfb373fd4a36c81e908ef3ce608c is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
