Linux Kernel up to 6.12.108/6.18.49/7.2.3 nfsd nfsd4_ff_encode_getdeviceinfo buffer overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.108/6.18.49/7.2.3. It has been declared as problematic. Impacted is the function nfsd4_ff_encode_getdeviceinfo of the component nfsd. Such manipulation leads to buffer overflow. This vulnerability is listed as CVE-2026-89673. The attack may be performed from remote. There is no available exploit. It is recommended to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.108/6.18.49/7.2.3. Affected by this issue is the function nfsd4_ff_encode_getdeviceinfo of the component nfsd. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a buffer overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-120. The product copies an input buffer to an output buffer without verifying that the size of the input buffer is less than the size of the output buffer, leading to a buffer overflow. Impacted is confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: nfsd: fix XDR padding calculation in ff_encode_getdeviceinfo nfsd4_ff_encode_getdeviceinfo() computes the da_addr_body reservation as 16 + netid_len + addr_len, but the subsequent xdr_encode_opaque() calls emit 8 + round_up(netid_len, 4) + round_up(addr_len, 4) bytes. The mismatch means the declared da_addr_body length exceeds the actual encoded data by 2-8 bytes on every flexfile GETDEVICEINFO reply, leaking stale reply-page content to the client and mis-aligning the subsequent version list decode. Use xdr_align_size() for each string length to match what xdr_encode_opaque() actually writes.

The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-89673 since 09/11/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 09/12/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.12.109, 6.18.50, 7.2.4 or 7.3-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 74015b7be806ad9e21d46f7bd2831df280c6c783/41ebca28e17f84293650598f86bd69532ec1a8e0/62e5949f0dd5ec837af144860ff908369df4c7c9/8b989aaec85e1293a871d602590c951fe44b8647 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
