Linux Kernel up to 6.18.50/7.2.3 nfsd nfsd4_create return value

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.18.50/7.2.3. It has been classified as critical. Affected is the function nfsd4_create of the component nfsd. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a return value vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-252. The product does not check the return value from a method or function, which can prevent it from detecting unexpected states and conditions. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: nfsd: check nfsd4_acl_to_attr() return value in nfsd4_create() nfsd4_create() stores the return value of nfsd4_acl_to_attr() in status, but the switch(create->cr_type) block unconditionally overwrites it in every branch. ACL translation errors are silently discarded, and the CREATE proceeds without the requested ACL. Add an early exit check after nfsd4_acl_to_attr(), matching the pattern already used in nfsd4_setattr(). [ cel: prefer NFS4ERR_BADTYPE over NFS4ERR_ATTRNOTSUPP ]

The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2026-89693 since 09/11/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 09/12/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.18.51, 7.2.4 or 7.3-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 430ed49a16cf9ca249d0fb51490582090bc4848b/80cebb0e8a8d1e758f0d671f5e047279c5c3e528/2c7912732184773dbd371a411da87af1cc080b86 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
