Linux Kernel up to 6.12.108/6.18.49/7.2.3 cifs cifs_remap_file_range toctou

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.108/6.18.49/7.2.3. It has been declared as very critical. This vulnerability affects the function cifs_remap_file_range of the component cifs. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a toctou vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-367. The product checks the state of a resource before using that resource, but the resource's state can change between the check and the use in a way that invalidates the results of the check. This can cause the product to perform invalid actions when the resource is in an unexpected state. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: cifs: fix loff_t underflow in cifs_remap_file_range() when len == 0 With len == 0 (clone to EOF), the effective length is computed as: len = src_inode->i_size - off; If off > i_size, this is a negative loff_t, corrupting the ByteCount in the FSCTL_DUPLICATE_EXTENTS_TO_FILE request and inverting the range in filemap_write_and_wait_range(). The existing off >= i_size check fires only after the ioctl has already been sent. Snapshot i_size_read() once for both the bounds check and the length calculation, eliminating the TOCTOU and 32-bit torn-read risk. Reject off > src_size with -EINVAL. Treat off == src_size as a no-op, consistent with __generic_remap_file_range_prep().

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-89640 since 09/11/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/12/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.12.109, 6.18.50, 7.2.4 or 7.3-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch b098f5e5858797827666e6cd73033f52fc39b5f6/c2a0dcb5a7a1516aa6eb6d5cedca6a8e76527028/b057ca17b656345d04669cb87f2aff9b31d873db/6c322f5cf7476ded7a9a20f7be72462065a03c68 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
