Microsoft Windows Server 2008/Vista SMB Processor EducatedScholar resource management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Windows Server 2008/Vista (Operating System). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects some unknown processing of the component SMB Processor. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability (EducatedScholar). Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-399. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Array index error in the SMBv2 protocol implementation in srv2.sys in Microsoft Windows Vista Gold, SP1, and SP2, Windows Server 2008 Gold and SP2, and Windows 7 RC allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (system crash) via an & (ampersand) character in a Process ID High header field in a NEGOTIATE PROTOCOL REQUEST packet, which triggers an attempted dereference of an out-of-bounds memory location, aka "SMBv2 Negotiation Vulnerability." NOTE: some of these details are obtained from third party information.

The weakness was released 09/08/2009 by Laurent Gaffié as MS09-050 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at technet.microsoft.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2009-3103 since 09/08/2009. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed by laurent gaffie in Python and been published before and not just after the advisory. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 40887 (MS09-050: Microsoft Windows SMB2 _Smb2ValidateProviderCallback() Vulnerability (975497) (uncredentialed check)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90527 (Microsoft Server Message Block (SMBv2) Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS09-050) and Shadow Brokers (EDUCATEDSCHOLAR)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS09-050 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 11792.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (53090), Exploit-DB (9594), Tenable (40887), SecurityFocus (BID 36299†) and OSVDB (57799†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-50449 and VDB-50445. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
