Details
A vulnerability was found in OpenTelemetry Collector Contrib up to 0.150.x. It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is the function handleReq of the file receiver/githubreceiver/trace_receiver.go of the component GitHub Receiver. The manipulation of the argument Secret with an unknown input leads to a improper authentication vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-287. When an actor claims to have a given identity, the product does not prove or insufficiently proves that the claim is correct. Impacted is integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The OpenTelemetry Collector Contrib repository contains components for the OpenTelemetry Collector. Prior to 0.151.0, the githubreceiver validates the receiver/githubreceiver/config.go RequiredHeaders configuration at startup, but receiver/githubreceiver/trace_receiver.go handleReq() does not check those headers on incoming webhook requests. An unauthenticated sender can therefore bypass an operator's required_headers authentication control and submit arbitrary webhook payloads. When the Secret field is empty, github.ValidatePayload also skips HMAC validation, leaving the webhook endpoint without either configured authentication mechanism. Successful exploitation can inject fabricated CI/CD trace data into the observability pipeline. This issue is fixed in version 0.151.0.
The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-55701 since 06/17/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
Upgrading to version 0.151.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
