Details
A vulnerability has been found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6/6 SP1/7/8 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing of the component Data Stream Header Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Microsoft Internet Explorer 6, 6 SP1, 7, and 8 does not properly handle objects in memory, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code by accessing an object that (1) was not properly initialized or (2) is deleted, leading to memory corruption, aka "Uninitialized Memory Corruption Vulnerability," a different vulnerability than CVE-2009-2530.
The weakness was published 10/13/2009 by Sam Thomas with Microsoft as MS09-054 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at microsoft.com. The public release has been coordinated with Microsoft. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2009-2531 since 07/17/2009. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.
