Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Newell Brands DYMO Connect Desktop up to 1.6.1. Affected by this issue is the function LoadImageAsPngBase64 of the component Local Web Service. The manipulation of the argument file_path with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is confidentiality. CVE summarizes:
The LoadImageAsPngBase64 endpoint of the Newell Brands DYMO Connect Desktop local web service accepts a file path parameter without adequate validation, allowing a crafted path to read arbitrary image files from the host filesystem outside the intended scope. Fixed in 1.6.2. The fix limits access by file extension only, not by directory - arbitrary-location reads of files with an allowed image extension remain possible by design (accepted residual risk).
The advisory is available at mediaserver.newellrubbermaid.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-76796 since 08/19/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1006 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
