Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 7.2.4 and classified as very critical. This issue affects the function recover_inode/recover_dentry of the component F2FS. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a buffer overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-120. The product copies an input buffer to an output buffer without verifying that the size of the input buffer is less than the size of the output buffer, leading to a buffer overflow. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: f2fs: limit recovery filename logging to stored length F2FS stores recovery filenames as a length plus a fixed-size i_name buffer. The buffer is not NUL-terminated, but recover_inode() and recover_dentry() print it with %s. For a 255-byte filename, recovery logging can read past i_name into the following raw inode fields. Print the name with a precision bounded by i_namelen and F2FS_NAME_LEN.
The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-89838 since 09/11/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/16/2026).
Upgrading to version 7.2.5 or 7.3-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 317d32e1a8deaf1c01c388badc667334c39e62ca/01027b2fcb74dade59fb833b51023f6593b6a9a2 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
