Linux Kernel up to 7.2.4 v4l2-fwnode v4l2-fwnode.c v4l2_fwnode_parse_link memory leak

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 7.2.4. It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is the function v4l2_fwnode_parse_link of the file v4l2-fwnode.c of the component v4l2-fwnode. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory leak vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-401. The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, which slowly consumes remaining memory. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: media: v4l2-fwnode: Fix fwnode leak in v4l2_fwnode_parse_link In v4l2_fwnode_parse_link(), the remote endpoint fwnode reference is acquired using fwnode_graph_get_remote_endpoint(). This reference is properly released in the error paths, but it is leaked on the success path. Add the missing fwnode_handle_put() before returning 0 to prevent the reference leak. [Sakari Ailus: Fix subject prefix and coding style a little.]

The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-89872 since 09/11/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 09/16/2026). The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1499.

Upgrading to version 5.10.270, 5.15.221, 6.1.188, 6.6.157, 6.12.110, 6.18.51, 7.2.5 or 7.3-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch c9b5238d173ee9b94dcaa2b34244ea89c8024feb/ccd8d1d80afab8b492a583ae81bfd295835bab2f/d92dc4692834e04bc0ef1d0908589852050d1a66/ef609b3ce456f021320fee2fb7e45094a3ccf232/578c4bfa28bf21458ecdde2fd3fc429475f34c10/3ced388b7908270529e5aa6d221840114b6c33bc/881aafb139520570fd3390bf9938d7098b7fbb99/a6e86efd7f85e519bf48417f41923f8bd51f1597 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
