Details
A vulnerability classified as very critical has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.18.50/7.2.4. Affected is the function iris_vpu_power_off of the component iris. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: media: qcom: iris: use disable_irq() during power-off The IRQ is registered as a threaded IRQ. Using disable_irq_nosync() in iris_vpu_power_off() does not wait for an already queued threaded IRQ handler to complete before returning. As a result, a threaded IRQ handler may still run after the VPU has been powered down and access hardware registers after power-off. Replace disable_irq_nosync() with disable_irq() so the power-off path waits for any in-flight threaded IRQ handler to complete before returning.
The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2026-89869 since 09/11/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/16/2026).
Upgrading to version 6.18.51, 7.2.5 or 7.3-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch ff98cd2b8b54cf96bccace2f7b7e4775cdccaf02/d7f34cbaced92069400fc5d71fefe3cb4c748da8/b9c2215bdedc9c532a7e9d57ec49ee1b6381f863 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
