Details
A vulnerability classified as very critical has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.1.187/6.6.156/6.12.109/6.18.50/7.2.4. Affected is the function dm_setup_md_queue of the component dm. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: dm: fix race when loading and unloading a table If the userspace calls two concurrent table load ioctls and one of them succeeds and the other fails, there is a race condition because dm_setup_md_queue walks &md->table_devices without any lock. If the walk races with dm_table_destroy -> free_devices -> dm_put_table_device, there is access to invalid memory. Fix this race by extending the lock over the list walk.
The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2026-89998 since 09/11/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. Additional levels of successful authentication are necessary for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 09/16/2026).
Upgrading to version 6.1.188, 6.6.157, 6.12.110, 6.18.51, 7.2.5 or 7.3-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch b02e35b81176c7d61dd441cc7a2e5c324a82444b/0ea6e5ad4a5817e91f11b4cc1e022e575ed2e7ca/a1af1884c960b98c621b6fe2fea1216b78c02152/af1f32ccf8051f4691ced11feb452b9d13561727/00ad6f9ed27f91925d4d3fb7aab50a60d774f998/5380c7f6335cc6d77eb77d065105e81155c4d9d3 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
