Details
A vulnerability has been found in Boost regex library 1.33 (Software Library) and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown part. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:
regex/v4/perl_matcher_non_recursive.hpp in the Boost regex library (aka Boost.Regex) in Boost 1.33 and 1.34 allows context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (failed assertion and crash) via an invalid regular expression.
The bug was discovered 01/11/2008. The weakness was presented 01/17/2008 by Tavis Ormandy (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at issues.rpath.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2008-0171 since 01/09/2008. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 6 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68476 (Oracle Linux 5 : boost (ELSA-2012-0305)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156283 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for Boost (ELSA-2012-0305)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 5 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
