Details
A vulnerability was found in MidnightBSD mport up to 2.7.7 and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function mport_verify_package of the file libmport/verify.c of the component Package Verification. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a weak password hash vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-916. The product generates a hash for a password, but it uses a scheme that does not provide a sufficient level of computational effort that would make password cracking attacks infeasible or expensive. Impacted is confidentiality. CVE summarizes:
mport is the MidnightBSD Package Manager. Prior to 2.7.8, mport_verify_package() in libmport/verify.c could continue after MD5File() or SHA256_File() failed and compare an expected checksum with stale data in the hash buffer rather than a newly computed digest. An attacker able to influence an installed file or the conditions that make hashing fail could receive a misleading integrity result or hide a checksum failure. This issue is fixed in version 2.7.8.
The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-54578 since 06/15/2026. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. Additional levels of successful authentication are necessary for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1552 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
Upgrading to version 2.7.8 eliminates this vulnerability.
