Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 7.2.5. Affected by this issue is the function ntfs_decompress of the component NTFS Compression. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ntfs: fix kmap_local_page() usage in compress Several compressed I/O paths discard the address returned by kmap_local_page() and later access or unmap the page using page_address(). This is invalid for highmem pages, and local mappings must also be unmapped using the address returned by kmap_local_page(). Map each destination page in ntfs_decompress() only while producing the current sub-block. Use memcpy_from_page(), memcpy_to_page(), and memzero_page() for the other page accesses. Remove unnecessary local mappings from ntfs_write_cb(), where pages are accessed through the vmap() mapping.
The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-90134 since 09/11/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/17/2026).
Upgrading to version 7.2.6 or 7.3-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 950e2ecc7aec21af24b05bc661a097a81c670409/6e03fbd5f772ad24ea64f7632e4d0d73184787ca is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
