Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 7.2.5. This issue affects the function module_init of the file smb/server of the component ksmbd. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a allocation of resources vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-770. The product allocates a reusable resource or group of resources on behalf of an actor without imposing any restrictions on the size or number of resources that can be allocated, in violation of the intended security policy for that actor. Impacted is integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: smb/server: call ksmbd_proc_cleanup() on module init failure When a later initializer fails, the unwind chain releases resources created after procfs and then jumps directly to class_unregister(). Returning an error from module_init() leaves the proc tree and its per-CPU counters allocated.
The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-90163 since 09/11/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/17/2026). MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1499 for this issue.
Upgrading to version 7.2.6 or 7.3-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 7d2cd9269b570347e6e2dd24d4b3c1da868bc91d/f43cbe3b58ce989ce420c3bc875d48e7754c8aba is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
