Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.109/6.18.51/7.2.5 and classified as very critical. Affected by this issue is the function _bpf_setsockopt/_bpf_getsockopt of the component BPF. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: bpf: Disallow bpf_{g,s}etsockopt() in cgroup UNIX getname hooks _bpf_setsockopt() and _bpf_getsockopt() call sock_owned_by_me() for full sockets, so these helpers expect the socket lock to be held. BPF_CGROUP_UNIX_GETPEERNAME and BPF_CGROUP_UNIX_GETSOCKNAME run BPF programs without acquiring the socket lock. A program attached to either hook can therefore trigger the sock_owned_by_me() warning by calling bpf_setsockopt() or bpf_getsockopt(). Disallow bpf_setsockopt() and bpf_getsockopt() for CGROUP_UNIX_GETPEERNAME and CGROUP_UNIX_GETSOCKNAME.
The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-90159 since 09/11/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. Additional levels of successful authentication are necessary for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 09/17/2026).
Upgrading to version 6.12.110, 6.18.52, 7.2.6 or 7.3-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 61769b9c882a964af3a6ebd9a8e43615f8713234/fe91c3f64a738dd97e8542ad5bdfbe5ac430edf6/daeb74f5f398e847d1d42906aec6610406a34fdc/84473a7e1813a2da7b759ab1d098a84998c8d3f5 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
