Linux Kernel up to 7.2.5 Sunplus Phy Driver sp_uphy_init denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as very critical has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.1.187/6.6.156/6.12.109/6.18.51/7.2.5. Affected is the function sp_uphy_init of the component Sunplus Phy Driver. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: phy: sunplus: fix error handling in sp_uphy_init() Fix the error paths of sp_uphy_init() to undo exactly what each stage did: return directly if clk_prepare_enable() fails, release only the clock if reset_control_deassert() fails, and jump to err_reset if update_disc_vol() fails so the clock and reset are not leaked.

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2026-90287 since 09/11/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/17/2026). This vulnerability is assigned to T1499 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

Upgrading to version 6.1.188, 6.6.157, 6.12.110, 6.18.52, 7.2.6 or 7.3-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch d8856bfe6d00c21c4c0ba689cb6c9e30ceaccb8f/1fce81a40e3b3ec6b4f52e278d5c2bde79b25939/3a7dcbe3112aef3505beae4f982331a00326217c/1489b694b1f3265cd5363100642a22190033f4b0/5acdc4d5b58bd0730824938db79b5f08ef996d9c/8b2683bc4cc18c581b7cd24f227cbe61abca7f4d is able to eliminate this problem.
