Linux Kernel up to 7.2.5 CRTC sun4i_crtc.c sun4i_crtc_init null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability labeled as critical has been found in Linux Kernel up to 7.2.5. This impacts the function sun4i_crtc_init of the file drivers/gpu/drm/sun4i/sun4i_crtc.c of the component CRTC. Executing a manipulation can lead to null pointer dereference. This vulnerability is tracked as CVE-2026-90297. The attack can be launched remotely. No exploit exists. The affected component should be upgraded.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 7.2.5 and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function sun4i_crtc_init of the file drivers/gpu/drm/sun4i/sun4i_crtc.c of the component CRTC. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/sun4i: crtc: Propagate layer initialization error sun4i_crtc_init() returns plain NULL when layer initialization fails, while all its other error paths return an error pointer. The only caller, sun4i_tcon_bind(), checks the result with IS_ERR() and happily continues with tcon->crtc set to NULL. sun4i_rgb_init() and sun4i_lvds_init() then dereference it in drm_crtc_mask(), which oopses. Return the error pointer instead.

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-90297 since 09/11/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/17/2026).

Upgrading to version 5.10.270, 5.15.221, 6.1.188, 6.6.157, 6.12.110, 6.18.52, 7.2.6 or 7.3-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch aaf812960fb5ade24be7a1d8fea27a1ffc458c30/e216d6168f25a69e5ae5b981ee73b3a860a46441/2bb3169788f8296c8fc1e0d4fa6f1c6367cd5829/1882112124a642de7571fbf354fa1929decbb3ef/8f32af44d43332c02198752e596df00659bf4354/65bc02fec98e4e1d7d59d86cf2ddf8fd73dacb89/c0d3219ffd4c0d42295e0dc949856067b7818b71/7061ff05ed4a3cf16e83f7e3ad09cbd212508a32 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
