Linux Kernel up to 7.2.5 nilfs2 nilfs_read_inode_common out-of-bounds

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

It is recommended to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Linux Kernel up to 7.2.5. Affected is the function nilfs_read_inode_common of the component nilfs2. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: nilfs2: prevent out-of-bounds read in super root block parsing super-root inode metadata size is trusted before nilfs_read_inode_common(). Reject super-root inode sizes whose computed on-disk footprint exceeds the filesystem block size. This prevents malformed filesystem images from making nilfs_read_inode_common() read past the end of the super-root block. [ryusuke: clarify the commit title]

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2026-90419 since 09/11/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. Additional levels of successful authentication are required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

Upgrading to version 5.10.270, 5.15.221, 6.1.188, 6.6.157, 6.12.110, 6.18.52, 7.2.6 or 7.3-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 16df2520502867a4f34e202b89d01243d59bb8b5/dcc85fc28f884038735464f6f104dda9c7dbfad6/5b69ebe20d7f944c1f45177dca0c11474ac277cc/7029e70cf86d5c54c0a2812479b0bee2cabcbaaa/71bd64471ff583101b4a33dfc838ce29aef57960/842397fdfd2e61d6470166c796f3125b6c27a162/15c8559376416a84c3d8402fd8d0c89bb323d05f/7cb2f76a6a2ba2130b577cb8ac13e1e46c4fc689 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
