Details
A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.109/6.18.51/7.2.5 and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function backlog_store of the file md/bitmap of the component bitmap. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a locking vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-667. The product does not properly acquire or release a lock on a resource, leading to unexpected resource state changes and behaviors. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: md/bitmap: resume array on backlog_store() error path backlog_store() suspends the array before checking whether a write-mostly device exists. If no such device exists, the error path only unlocks reconfig_mutex and leaves the array suspended, blocking subsequent I/O. Use mddev_unlock_and_resume() to release both states.
The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-90390 since 09/11/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 09/17/2026).
Upgrading to version 6.12.110, 6.18.52, 7.2.6 or 7.3-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 03aad318f0a1f039dddf98739e705fdca3bf0d86/6763fb409a0b4106676a52cf934440d9484b32c8/cc543e769b97d563b089b9e0ebf8ad361d15076f/2911cd0a0f4366a7e06832bc5f0a7fdcc138e4dc is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
