Details
A vulnerability classified as very critical has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.1.187/6.6.156/6.12.109/6.18.51/7.2.5. Affected is the function ufs_saved_err_write of the component debugfs. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: scsi: ufs: debugfs: Reserve space for a string terminator ufs_saved_err_write() copies user input into a zero-initialized stack buffer and passes it to kstrtoint(). A write that fills the entire buffer overwrites its only terminator. Reject an input whose length leaves no room for the trailing NUL.
The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2026-92477 since 09/16/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. The exploitation requires an enhanced level of successful authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 09/17/2026).
Upgrading to version 6.1.188, 6.6.157, 6.12.110, 6.18.52, 7.2.6 or 7.3-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch b43890843e834300f967c69e74c7c2eb22cb1664/587be18e0935632ebd367b0f89e37aa5762e400f/d223989e1a1edad217b673486b093bd157fb6c9a/cc92af8cc0e4dacd4375d34475141b0f1a70c09e/2b3fb5693c25c21741f357a8c9d0e1f19b7e368f/abd26e6b53c4169122d61fdd4cabe09bdd916aac is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
