Linux Kernel up to 7.2.5 asus-wireless asus_wireless_probe null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

It is advisable to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 7.2.5 and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function asus_wireless_probe of the component asus-wireless. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: platform/x86: asus-wireless: Fail probe when there is no ACPI match Every platform driver can be forced to match a device that does not match its list of device IDs because of device_match_driver_override(), so platform drivers that rely on the existence of a device ACPI companion object need to verify its presence. asus_wireless_probe() returns success when acpi_match_acpi_device() finds no match, leaving behind an input device that never reports anything because the notify handler is not installed. Worse, when the driver is force-bound to a device without an ACPI companion, probe still succeeds and stores a NULL companion pointer, which asus_wireless_remove() later passes to acpi_dev_remove_notify_handler(), leading to a NULL pointer dereference on unbind. Return -ENODEV when the device does not match the ID table. This also covers the missing-companion case, because acpi_match_acpi_device() rejects a NULL device. Perform the check before allocating any driver state, instead of after the input device has already been registered.

The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-93124 since 09/17/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. Additional levels of successful authentication are necessary for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

Upgrading to version 7.2.6 or 7.3-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 7bfa711f311a584002e16ecd750627306deb805c/4aefd66ef7822cf7d3f53146dcee0b71021ed2b7 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
