Linux Kernel up to 7.2.5 BPF bpf_find_vma mm/alloc_lock use after free

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.1.187/6.6.156/6.12.109/6.18.51/7.2.5 and classified as very critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function bpf_find_vma of the component BPF. The manipulation of the argument mm/alloc_lock with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-416. Referencing memory after it has been freed can cause a program to crash, use unexpected values, or execute code. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: bpf: Fix use-after-free on mm_struct in bpf_find_vma() bpf_find_vma() reads task->mm and calls mmap_read_trylock(mm) without holding a reference on the mm. On a foreign task, a concurrent exit_mm() can free the mm_struct between the lockless read and the trylock, resulting in a use-after-free. mm_struct is not SLAB_TYPESAFE_BY_RCU. For the current task, task->mm is stable. For a foreign task, pin the mm under task->alloc_lock and release it with mmput_async(), mirroring commit d8e27d2d22b6 ("bpf: fix mm lifecycle in open-coded task_vma iterator"). Use spin_trylock() instead of get_task_mm() so BPF context does not block on alloc_lock. Reject irqs-disabled contexts and !CONFIG_MMU on the foreign-task path because dropping the mm reference is not safe there. Race: CPU0 (BPF program) CPU1 (exiting task) ============================ ========================== bpf_find_vma(foreign_task): mm = task->mm exit_mm(): task->mm = NULL mmput(mm) -> frees mm_struct mmap_read_trylock(mm) // UAF on mm

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-93137 since 09/17/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation requires an enhanced level of successful authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/17/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.1.188, 6.6.157, 6.12.110, 6.18.52, 7.2.6 or 7.3-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch db347840d6b6ee9bb9b8e4a985d4b4419f9f3200/8e1101fc4118019a69c96ced4aec93164f89cbd5/c7ad910e987008e125eeff448892e86852173384/86d54cf069fc5ae2e111c87933bebf6eb527978e/2b2a903bee56d312539046d9defa8023eec94760/47b079e2117a2ee52e21f8b72935900c702fc0b5 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
