Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 7.2.5. It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function udf_pc_to_char of the component UDF Symlink Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: UDF symlink pathComponent header OOB read udf_symlink_filler() can enter udf_pc_to_char() with a partial pathComponent header. Validate that enough input remains for a complete pathComponent header before accessing it. Reject malformed symlink data that would otherwise make udf_pc_to_char() perform an out-of-bounds read.
The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-93055 since 09/17/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. Additional levels of successful authentication are necessary for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
