Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.18.51/7.2.5 and classified as very critical. This issue affects the function cxl_get_feature of the component cxl. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a buffer overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-120. The product copies an input buffer to an output buffer without verifying that the size of the input buffer is less than the size of the output buffer, leading to a buffer overflow. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: cxl/features: Clamp Get Feature output size to the remaining buffer cxl_get_feature() reads a feature in a loop but passes a fixed size_out as the output capacity every iteration. On the last partial iteration the buffer has less room left, so a device that returns more than asked can overflow feat_out. Use the per-iter size data_to_rd_size, which already tracks the remaining room, as the output capacity.
It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-93077 since 09/17/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/17/2026).
Upgrading to version 6.18.52, 7.2.6 or 7.3-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch b8abbd5c2928fd839dab702244cc57b228ab43aa/ca95b15a0760e7724e61addbdd61050be13b6406/2aeb21fe557ef154f0cdf4f9745ebd8d5b31ca83 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
