Linux Kernel up to 6.18.51/7.2.5 ipu7 ipu7_resume reference count

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.18.51/7.2.5. It has been declared as critical. This issue affects the function ipu7_resume of the component ipu7. Executing a manipulation can lead to reference count. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-93143. The attack can only be executed locally. There is no exploit available. It is recommended to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.18.51/7.2.5. This vulnerability affects the function ipu7_resume of the component ipu7. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a reference count vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-911. The product uses a reference count to manage a resource, but it does not update or incorrectly updates the reference count. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: staging: media: ipu7: fix pm_runtime refcount leak in ipu7_resume() ipu7_resume() calls pm_runtime_get_sync() before resuming the device. If the runtime PM resume fails, the usage count remains incremented, but the error path returns without dropping the reference. Use pm_runtime_resume_and_get() instead, which balances the usage count on failure and avoids the leak. Keep returning 0 on error, as resume callbacks should not propagate failures to the PM core, matching the behaviour of the ipu6 driver.

The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-93143 since 09/17/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

Upgrading to version 6.18.52, 7.2.6 or 7.3-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 593fda71983b9c23c84a566b20c53dc402c6b376/437d6d15936db87485afabf7d52754b7b19cc787/b298b80814dd0fc3cb1c8c0e0082fc14fdb5fecf is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
