Linux Kernel up to 7.2.5 aspeed_udc ast_udc_probe null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability identified as problematic has been detected in Linux Kernel up to 6.1.187/6.6.156/6.12.109/6.18.51/7.2.5. This affects the function ast_udc_probe of the component aspeed_udc. Performing a manipulation results in null pointer dereference. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-93118. The attack needs to be approached locally. There is no available exploit. You should upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.1.187/6.6.156/6.12.109/6.18.51/7.2.5. It has been classified as problematic. This affects the function ast_udc_probe of the component aspeed_udc. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: usb: gadget: aspeed_udc: check endpoint DMA allocation ast_udc_probe() allocates a coherent DMA buffer used as the backing store for endpoint buffers. ast_udc_init_ep() derives per-endpoint buffer pointers from udc->ep0_buf, so a failed allocation is dereferenced during probe. Check the allocation before endpoint setup. The existing probe error path called ast_udc_remove(), which unregisters the gadget unconditionally and is not safe before usb_add_gadget_udc() succeeds. Add a local cleanup helper for probe failures so pre-registration failures only unwind the resources that were actually initialized. This was found by a local static analysis checker for unchecked allocator returns while scanning Linux 6.16. The change was checked by applying it to current mainline and by running checkpatch. I do not have access to Aspeed UDC hardware, so no runtime testing was performed.

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2026-93118 since 09/17/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

Upgrading to version 6.1.188, 6.6.157, 6.12.110, 6.18.52, 7.2.6 or 7.3-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch d7ae1a48e70e9c3451b7dc7bc3896c82884bc4df/4aaad88f857498ed1294f061f0b25d27ae891c55/6182e708e2e1f55521c8a01d7535630ecc2d7df9/ff6e88e29965bd06f640e59acdcf0bbf04a7f55c/9e6f57107c1886052d4baaa047a2bc3d0e91be5d/97cee53a94be3bd4fd8fbed6071bd2f32dad1ab1 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
