A vulnerability has been found in Web Wiz Rich Text Editor 4.0 and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown function of the file rte_file_browser.asp of the component Rich Text Editor. The manipulation of the argument sub with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Directory traversal vulnerability in RTE_file_browser.asp in Web Wiz Rich Text Editor 4.0 allows remote attackers to list arbitrary directories, and .txt and .zip files, via a .....\\\ in the sub parameter in a save action.
The weakness was disclosed 01/29/2008 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2008-0481 since 01/29/2008. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.
