Details
A vulnerability has been found in Imager up to 1.035 and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function tga_palette_read of the component TGA Reader. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a signed conversion vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-195. The product uses a signed primitive and performs a cast to an unsigned primitive, which can produce an unexpected value if the value of the signed primitive can not be represented using an unsigned primitive. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
Imager versions before 1.036 for Perl exit the process reading a TGA with a colour map length of 32768 or more in tga_palette_read. The reader unpacks the two-byte colour map length into a signed short, so a length of 32768 or more becomes negative. tga_palette_read() casts that value to size_t and asks mymalloc() for a size near SIZE_MAX. The allocation fails and Imager's allocator calls exit(3). Reading an attacker-supplied file through Imager->read() triggers an uncatchable exit.
The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-93019 since 09/17/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
Upgrading to version 1.036 eliminates this vulnerability.
