AcademySoftwareFoundation OpenImageIO up to 3.2.0.3-beta0 Fits Input fitsinput.cpp read_fits_header stack-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in AcademySoftwareFoundation OpenImageIO up to 3.2.0.3-beta0. Affected by this issue is the function FitsInput::read_fits_header of the file fitsinput.cpp of the component Fits Input Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

OpenImageIO is a toolset for reading, writing, and manipulating image files of any image file format relevant to VFX / animation. Prior to 3.0.20.0, 3.1.15.0, and 3.2.0.3-beta1, A crafted fits stream containing consecutive 2880-byte header blocks without the mandatory end keyword makes fitsinput::read_fits_header() call itself without a depth bound. repeated recursive parsing exhausts the application stack, resulting in denial of service. The affected implementation is identified by src/fits.imageio/fitsinput.cpp, FitsInput::read_fits_header(), END keyword, and 2880-byte FITS header blocks, which define the relevant source path, functions, state, and trigger. This issue is fixed in versions 3.0.20.0, 3.1.15.0, and 3.2.0.3-beta1.

The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-59156 since 07/02/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

Upgrading to version 3.0.20.0, 3.1.15.0 or 3.2.0.3-beta1 eliminates this vulnerability.
