Integer overflow in the Embedded OpenType (EOT) Font Engine (t2embed.dll) in Microsoft Windows 2000 SP4; Windows XP SP2 and SP3; Windows Server 2003 SP2; Windows Vista Gold, SP1, and SP2; Windows Server 2008 Gold, SP2, and R2; and Windows 7 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via compressed data that represents a crafted EOT font, aka "Microtype Express Compressed Fonts Integer Flaw in the LZCOMP Decompressor Vulnerability."
The weakness was released 01/12/2010 by Tavis Ormandy (@taviso) with Google Security Team as MS10-001 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2010-0018 since 12/14/2009. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS10-001 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 11955.
