Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Red Hat Enterprise Linux up to 3 (Operating System). This vulnerability affects some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The Linux kernel 2.6.9 before 2.6.9-67 in Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 4 on Itanium (ia64) does not properly handle page faults during NUMA memory access, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (panic) via invalid arguments to set_mempolicy in an MPOL_BIND operation.
The bug was discovered 01/31/2008. The weakness was released 02/04/2008 with Red Hat (Website). The advisory is shared for download at rhn.redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2007-4130 since 08/02/2007. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67641 (Oracle Linux 4 : kernel (ELSA-2008-0055)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117348 (CentOS Security Update for Kernel (CESA-2008:0055)).
Upgrading to version 4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
