Details
A vulnerability has been found in Envoy Proxy Envoy up to 1.36.9/1.37.5/1.38.3/1.39.0 and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code of the component oghttp2. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
Envoy is an open source edge and service proxy designed for cloud-native applications. Prior to 1.36.10, 1.37.6, 1.38.4, and 1.39.1, Envoy's optional oghttp2 upstream HTTP/2 codec accepts a response trailer HEADERS frame without END_STREAM. Envoy completes and deferred-deletes the ActiveRequest while oghttp2 keeps the stream open, leaving ClientStreamImpl with a dangling response_decoder_ reference. A later frame on the stream can dispatch through the freed object and crash the process. The relevant scope boundary is that the default nghttp2 codec rejects the malformed trailers, and the trigger is upstream-only with oghttp2 enabled. This issue is fixed in versions 1.36.10, 1.37.6, 1.38.4, and 1.39.1.
The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-73513 since 08/12/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
Upgrading to version 1.36.10, 1.37.6, 1.38.4 or 1.39.1 eliminates this vulnerability.
